I heard Noémie's cello played by another cellist and it immediately attracted me. I wasn't looking for a new cello at all, but when I heard that it was for sale, I decided on the spot that I had to buy it. That's how good it is! Not only does it sound good, but it is also very open and resonant, which gives you a sense of security when you play it. I think it’s also beautiful aesthetically, especially because it is honest about it being new: it looks new and there is nothing hidden. It's a super good instrument!

I had been looking for a new viola for quite few years and I had tried all the instruments that passed my way. In September 2015, I was handed a viola that I completely fell for from the first minut. I brought it home and compared it with my Storioni and I also compared it too many old master instruments and new made ones. I played symphony and chamber music on it and decided to buy it. It is very easy and comfortable to play, it’s well balanced and has a round and complexed sound and it has an incredible volume in the hall. So now, I’m a lucky and happy owner of a beautiful viola built by Noémie Viaud.

Noémie's instruments are absolutely top notch and she is regarded by the violin making community as one of the top makers in the world. I was patiently looking for a viola for some years already, and I had been to several different places to try instruments, but I never found an instrument that I both liked and that was affordable until I came across this viola from Noémie. I tried it a few days after it was finished, and I asked Noémie to take it home and try it further in different settings. The viola has a dark profound quality to the sound, but yet direct. It is also remarkably comfortable to play. I decided to buy it before she went to the VSA 2022 competition, and I was very happy to hear that it received a well-deserved gold medal.

Since my time in the conservatory, I had been lucky that a foundation lent me beautiful, old and expensive violins. Since they are on loan, I had been looking for an instrument to call my own, but it seemed impossible to find a violin that both lived up to my professional requirements and was in my price range. When I received Noémie’s violin, I was immediately convinced that here was the replacement of my little Amati. Her violin has a big and effortless sound, beautiful color and is easy to play. It blends well into the symphony orchestra, but it also has enough power and charm for solo and chamber music. I’m glad to finally have found my instrument and I’m looking forward to the lifelong relationship we have started.

In Autumn 2019, I had been on the look out for an instrument for quite some time. Having tried many instruments, old and new, at various luthiers and dealers in London and Copenhagen, one day I got to try Noémie’s new cello. The first thing that struck me was that it felt very comfortable to play. It has a great bass and an A-string that sings beautifully. I tried it in a concert hall, comparing it to old master instruments by Grancino, Testore and Tecchler and found that already then, it could compete with these great instruments. Built with supreme craft(wo)manship, this instrument already has many wonderful sound qualities, and I believe it has the potential of becoming a top instrument.

Our relation to our instrument is such a complex thing. We put so much of our confidence in it, have to trust it, believe that it will be there for us in any situation. For more than 27 years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting violins, violas, and cellos by hand. Each instrument is a unique journey, and I continue to find joy and inspiration in every piece I make. My goal is to build instruments that not only sing with clarity and warmth but also inspire the musicians who play them..

My journey began when I started playing violin at age seven. I vividly remember my first visit to a violin maker’s workshop with my parents to rent a quarter-size violin. The atmosphere, the tools, the wood—the entire world of the workshop captivated me. From that moment, I knew I had found my vocation.

At the age of 15, I enrolled in the renowned École de Lutherie in Mirecourt, France, where I spent five years studying the art of violin making and restoration. After earning my diploma in 2003, I worked in several workshops, including those of Olivier Pérot (Montréal, Canada), The Sound Post (Toronto, Canada), and Urs Wenk Wolff (Oslo, Norway).

In 2006, I moved to Denmark and joined the workshop of Jens Stenz where I worked for 7 years. Encouraged by him, I returned to making new instruments in 2007.
Since 2014, I’ve run my own workshop, where I focus exclusively on creating violins, violas, and cellos for musicians around the world.

Collaboration and exchange are essential for me. I regularly participate in workshops such as the Oberlin College Violin Makers’ Summer Workshop (USA) and the Brandenburg Violin Makers’ Workshop (Germany). I have also had the privilege of working closely with Frank Ravatin many times, gaining invaluable insights from his vast experience. I’ve also had the joy of building instruments with colleagues, including violas and a cello with Elià Fabré, a viola with Ryan L. Soltis, and another with Meike Aupperle.

My work has been recognized internationally with several awards, including a gold medal, two silver medals, and a bronze medal at the Violin Society of America competition and the Triennale Antonio Stradivari competition in Cremona.
In 2025, I was honored to be invited as a judge at the 15th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Making Competition.

Each instrument I make is the result of years of experience, a deep fascination for sound, and a true love for music and craftsmanship.
